Staff members, freelancer earn awards

Arkansas Catholic earned six writing awards during the annual Catholic Media Conference in Atlanta June. 21. 

Editor Malea Hargett brought home two first-place awards for best editorials for weekly newspapers, one on Arkansas’ maternal mortality rate and another on Catholics seeking public office. She also earned two second-place awards for editorials.

For her first-place award on the maternal mortality editorial, the judges said, “This editorial has an excellent, clear and strong voice throughout, allowing the reader to know exactly what’s wanted from them.”

Associate editor Katie Zakrzewski earned first place for best local news writing for weekly newspapers for her story on the nursing shortage in Catholic hospitals. The judges said, “Story looks not only at the problem but what is being done to address the issue. Very solid business story.”

Freelancer Aprille Hanson Spivey received an honorable mention for best local news writing for her story on the Little Rock tornado in March 2023.
