Jeremy Elsinger has nothing to look at. No texts to send, no selfies to snap, no tweets to read, no calls to make.

“No phone, no phone,” the 30-year-old laughed.

In the mid-2000s, his buddies made a pact not to get a cellphone. They eventually caved.

“I guess I just kind of held out. I never really needed one, always being around family members and friends. I definitely prefer the kind of face-to-face interaction as much as possible.”

Living in the present has served him well as a 10th and 12th grade math teacher at St. Joseph School in Conway the past six years.

He joined the bowling team when he was a junior at St. Joseph and has been involved as a volunteer or assistant for 11 years, becoming head coach four years ago.

“It was a sport that let me excel at something. I wanted to help other students feel that, maybe the non-athletic ones.”

Elsinger is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Frassati young adult group.

“I’m able to see other people that take their faith seriously and so then it strengthens mine,” he said.
