Mother Lange founded the Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore, the world's first sustained women's religious community for Black women. Sister Lucia was the eldest of three Portuguese children to report apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1917 in Fatima, Portugal. Pope Francis signed decrees June 22 recognizing the heroic virtues of both women and declaring each of them "venerable."
