Sunshine illuminates the 1933 Sacred Heart of Jesus statue in its new place in front of the new Blessed Sacrament Church in Jonesboro in Caroline A. Brodell’s photo that won first place in Arkansas Catholic’s 2019 contest to select an image for the cover of the 2020 diocesan directory.
Brodell will receive photographer credit in the directory, a free copy and a one-year subscription to Arkansas Catholic.
Second place was won by Lillian T. Howerton of Morrilton for a photo of a statue of Mary in a blue-tiled grotto on the grounds of St. Mary of the Springs Church in Hot Springs.
Mary Compton of Hope won third place with her photo of St. Edward Church in Texarkana.
Honorable mentions went to two photos entered by Elaine Lienhart of Little Rock. This year’s contest attracted eight qualified entries. Other photographers entered the contest from Bella Vista, Center Ridge, Conway and Wynne.
Eligible subjects were any architectural element or detail of a Catholic church or institution in Arkansas. Photos were judged by the newspaper staff based on composition, technical quality, visual appeal and suitability for the directory cover.
The 2020 Catholic Diocese of Little Rock Directory will be delivered in early October.
