Father Brendan Miller, OSB, a monk of Subiaco Abbey, died May 6. He was 80.

Born March 23, 1945, in Glendale, Calif., to the late Walter and Carmel Quinn Miller, Father Miller developed a love for his Celtic heritage after regularly spending summers in Ireland with his family while growing up. He received an associate degree in business administration from Los Angeles College and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University in Domingas Hills.

Father Miller served as a youth director in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and began discerning a vocation to religious life. After graduation, he joined the community of Conventual Franciscans in Torrance, Calif. During his five years with the Franciscans, he discerned a calling to the priesthood. Father Miller was ordained Nov. 12, 1983.

He spent several years ministering in Tennessee before feeling the call again to a monastic and contemplative life of community. He entered Subiaco Abbey in 1993. Father Miller professed his first vows as a monk of Subiaco Feb. 2, 1995, and made his final profession of vows on March 17, 1998.

From 1995 to 2018, he actively served in Subiaco Academy, the guest house and parish ministries. In his work for Subiaco Academy, Father Miller was a spiritual counselor and member of the academy student services staff, which aids students having difficulty with academic, disciplinary and personal concerns. He assisted parishes on the weekends around the state.

He is survived by one sister, Linda.

A vigil was held May 8 at St. Benedict Church at Subiaco Abbey, followed by a funeral Mass May 9.
