Students in St. Joseph High School’s English Honors class in Conway visited a local funeral home to learn how funeral services are planned. They studied the classic American drama “Our Town,” written by Thornton Wilder in 1938. It traces the lives of small-town families between 1901 and 1913. The third act, titled “Death and Eternity,” centers on the death and funeral of a main character.

“Over the years, my students have completed both wedding and funeral projects tied to our unit on ‘Our Town,’ teacher Alicia Yrle said. “As a teacher, I try to work as many real-life experiences into my class as possible to prepare my students for their futures.”

The three students participating in the project met with Roller-McNutt’s manager, Kim Thibodaux, who walked them through the process of planning a funeral, explaining the various costs and discussing the decisions the students would need to make. They created a portfolio and slideshow to present to their class.
