Stop the Bleed

Anatomy students at St. Joseph High School in Conway recently completed life-saving training. Three trauma experts from Arkansas Children’s Hospital taught the students simple skills that can reduce bleeding deaths in the same way that CPR training has reduced deaths from cardiac arrest. It comes from a course developed by the American College of Surgeons called “Stop the Bleed.” The students learned how to assess an emergency for serious bleeding injuries.

“They learned how to pack a wound, apply pressure to it and how to use a tourniquet,” teacher Abigail Barker said. “This links directly to anatomy as they are learning about blood and the cardiovascular system and how blood loss can be life-threatening.”
