Fort Smith deacon converted to faith in 1985

Deacon William “Bill” Curry, who served Immaculate Conception Church in Fort Smith, died Oct. 29. He was 78. 

Born in Pine Bluff to William E. Sr. and Margaret Curry, he graduated from the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology. He worked as an orderly at Jefferson Hospital and went on to graduate from dental school at the University of Tennessee in 1973. 

Curry and his wife, Donna, moved to Fort Smith in 1979, where Curry practiced oral surgery for more than 40 years. In 1985, he converted to the Catholic faith and was an original member of the Immaculate Conception Men of Faith group. He was ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Little Rock in June 2022, just one week after being diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer. 

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Mike Curry and Matt Curry; three daughters, Lisa Curry, Natalie Curry and Kathy Farver; one sister, Gloria Porter; and nine grandchildren.
