Daughter of Charity known for art and service

Sister Maria Liebeck, DC, a Daughter of Charity known for her service at Helping Hand of Greater Little Rock and as an artist, died July 29. She was 94. 

Born Shirley Doris Liebeck to Maximillian and Mary Lissa Atkins Liebeck, Sister Maria entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in 1950.

She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in St. Louis and a master’s degree in art from the University of Dallas. She taught in Iowa and Missouri as an art teacher. She returned to St. Louis to serve as assistant postulant director and art instructor and dean of students at Marillac College and assistant art instructor at Cardinal Glennon High School until 1972 before teaching art at high schools in Texas. 

She became a member of the Pastoral Ministry Team in Hamburg before going on to serve at Children’s Hospital and Helping Hand of Greater Little Rock. She moved to Seton Manor in Evansville, Ind., in 2015 to serve in the ministry of prayer. 

She is survived by several family members and sisters in the Daughters of Charity. The Mass of Christian Burial was held Aug. 2. Memorials may be made to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, St. Louis, MO 63108.
