St. Joseph School in Conway held a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) camp on its middle school campus July 15-18. Forty-three children from kindergarten through sixth grade attended. It was organized by third-grade teacher Abigail Covington, assisted by former preschool teacher Amy Covington, school counselor Meagan Williams and sixth-grade teacher Jennifer Fullerton.
The camp was based on a program developed by the National Inventors Hall of Fame. More than 1,000 of these camps are held across the country each year. They focus on the four “Cs”: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.
“The students engaged in a variety of activities,” Covington said. “These ranged from building their own light-up game boards, making one-of-a-kind glow boxes, experimenting with different forms of light, learning about water challenges around the world and developing prototypes for new tools.”
