One person killed during shooting at Sherwood hospital

UPDATED 10:30 a.m. Sept. 29

The Sherwood Police Department reported one person was killed and a “person of interest” was in custody during a shooting Sept. 28 at CHI St. Vincent North in Sherwood.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m., placing the hospital in lockdown. Leighton Whitfield, who was visiting a patient, was killed by at least one gunshot wound. Raymond Lovett, who knew Whitfield, was taken into custody.

Sherwood Police Chief Jeff Hagar said, “It appears to be an isolated event that just happened to take place in a public facility.”

The Little Rock FBI, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department and police from neighboring North Little Rock and Jacksonville also responded to the shooting. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor went to the hospital to offer his assistance.

Employees and family members gathered in the parking lot of Academy Sports next door.

CHI St. Vincent North is part of St. Vincent Health, with hospitals also in Little Rock, Morrilton and Hot Springs.
