Juan Mares, 42

St. Theresa, Little Rock

Assigned to: St. Theresa, Little Rock

Employment: Warehouse manager, Looneys Tire Center

Wife: Flora

How did you hear your calling to become a deacon? I felt God’s call through my oldest sister’s illness and death. After she died, I attended a retreat where I had a personal encounter with Jesus. This retreat helped me to live, to value my family and the love to serve the Church began. Over time, I learned more about our faith and my desire to serve grew little by little.

What ministries are you currently involved in? Bringing Communion to the elderly, baptismal preparation

Who have been the biggest influences in your diaconate formation? My wife, my children Juan Carlos Mares Jr. and Valeria Guadalupe Mares, Father Rubén Quinteros, Father Mario Jacobo, Sister Iliana Aponte and the diaconate formation team
