Jonesboro sister takes top place in annual photo contest

Sharp focus and strong composition distinguish a sunlit mosaic depicting St. Benedict in the first-place-winning photo by Sister Maria Rose Carter, OSB, of Holy Angels Convent in Jonesboro, in Arkansas Catholic’s annual contest to select an image for the cover of the next diocesan directory.

Sister Maria Rose made a strong showing in her first time entering any photo contest, also winning third place for a statue of the risen Christ, and two honorable mentions for images of statues of Mary as the Immaculate Heart and of St. Joseph cradling the infant Jesus in his arms. All of her winning photos were shot on the grounds of the convent she entered nine years ago. She said photography has been one of her favorite hobbies since age 10 when her brother gave her a camera for Christmas.

Shana Hill of Vilonia and Rebecca Mann of Bigelow tied for second place honors. Hill won with a photo of one of the mosaic stations of the cross at Subiaco Abbey and Mann’s winning entry showed an unusual night view of St. Boniface Church in the New Dixie community near Bigelow.

Honorable mentions were also awarded to Caroline Brodell of Jonesboro, Anurahdha Nagalingam of Centerton and Jay W. Kutchka of Fort Smith. This year’s contest, judged March 30 by members of the Arkansas Catholic staff, attracted 28 qualified entries from photographers in nine Arkansas cities, which also included Bella Vista, Heber Springs, North Little Rock and El Dorado.

The 2023 Diocese of Little Rock Directory will be delivered in fall 2022.
