After a one-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bishop McDonald Memorial Golf Classic returned, raising an expected $35,000, Oct. 18 at the Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village. The 26th edition of the tournament, which supports Catholic Charities of Arkansas, featured 40 four-person teams who took to the course in a shotgun scramble start with tee times at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Team prizes were flighted, allowing three winning groups per session. In the morning, David Nichols and Beth Walker won the longest drive competition, Gary Wolfer won closest to the hole and Steve Moothart and Teresa Miceli hit the straightest drives. Father John Marconi, pastor of Our Lady of Holy Souls in Little Rock, was inches away from winning a $5,000 prize on a hole-in-one, but Bill White was able to sink his shot in one try from the fourth tee to claim the cash. In the afternoon, Lita Baker and Craig Vick won the longest drive competition, Tim Reilly won closest to the hole and Melina Prince and Jim Timmerman has the straightest shots.
More than 30 organizations and individuals sponsored the tournament, including CHI St. Vincent. The golf tournament was named in honor of the late Bishop Andrew J. McDonald, who served as shepherd for the Diocese of Little Rock from 1972 to 2000.
