Brother Michael Endres, OSB, a monk at Subiaco Abbey for 18 years, died Oct. 9 from a heart attack. He was 56.
He was born June 22, 1964, to Richard and Rosemary Steiert Endres in Van Nuys, Calif. After moving to Fort Worth, Texas, he attended St. Peter the Apostle School and graduated from Western Hills High School in 1982.
After graduation, he worked as a foreman for COE Builders in Dallas. He went on to be a production supervisor for Lockheed in Fort Worth, Texas, a supervisor for Intraquest in Hurst, Texas, and an account representative from 1997 to 2000 in Irving, Texas.
Brother Michael came to Subiaco in February 2001 and entered the novitiate Aug. 8. He professed his vows on Sept. 8, 2002, keeping his baptismal name. After his vows, Brother Michael was an assistant in the abbey’s carpentry shop and attended classes at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville and St. Vincent Seminary and College in Latrobe, Pa. He worked in maintenance, on the farm and in the kitchen. For 10 years, he worked with Camp Subiaco, primarily as a boat operator for lake excursions. His recent job was assisting in the abbey refectory.
Brother Michael is survived by his parents; three brothers, Steven Endres, Phillip Endres and Jeff Endres; and three sisters, Peggy Speirs, Sharon Doherty and Lisa Endres.
A vigil was held Oct. 15 and a Mass of Christian Burial was Oct. 16, with burial in the abbey cemetery.
