Marylake friar served in Arkansas 16 years

Brother Bernard O’Neill, OCD, who served for 16 years at Marylake Monastery in Little Rock, died Sept. 15. He was 78.

He was born Nicholas Edward Louis O’Neill in Newcastle, New Brunswick, Canada, to Louis Everett O’Neill and Marie Josephine Murdock May 12, 1940. He entered the postulancy of the Discalced Carmelite Friars of the Oklahoma Province of St. Therese in 1982. On July 15, 1982, he entered the novitiate and took the name Brother Bernard Joseph of Christ Crucified.

Brother Bernard made his simple profession July 16, 1983, and solemn profession July 16, 1988. According to his funeral home obituary, he spent 16 years at Marylake Monastery in Little Rock. In recent years, he lived in Texas, including St. Joseph Residence in Dallas where he died.

He is survived by three brothers, John O’Neill, Donald O’Neill and Michael O’Neill; and three sisters, Marilyn Gallant, Betsy Smith and Colleen O’Neill.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 22.
