Golfers drive donations to Catholic Charities of Arkansas

The 23rd annual Bishop McDonald-Catholic Charities Golf Classic at Maumelle Country Club Sept. 25 was met with sunny weather and joyful golfers. Catholic Charities of Arkansas executive director Patrick Gallaher said he was “gloriously happy” with both the turnout and weather for the day.

This year, about 30 four-person teams participated, which included eight priests. Tee times began at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The four-person entry fee was $600 and $150 per individual. Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Hot Springs Village entered six teams.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Catholic Charities and raised about $40,000.

“We use it to shore up our programs when we have a shortfall,” Gallaher said. For the past four years, much of it has been used for immigration services, which include visas costs for victims of crime including domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. Aside from immigration, CCA offers services for prison ministry, social action and the Westside Free Medical Clinic.

About 20 organizations or individuals sponsored the tournament this year, with CHI St. Vincent as the underwriter.
