Golfers raise money for ministries during tournament

Kevin Norton swings to hit his ball on hole 15 as teammates Alan Abston and Jim Draper watch during the 22nd annual Bishop McDonald-Catholic Charities Golf Classic at Maumelle Country Club Sept. 26.

Catholic Charities of Arkansas executive director Patrick Gallaher said while temperatures soared unusually high for fall the day before the tournament, “suddenly today it’s perfect,” hovering in the low 70s.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Catholic Charities with 136 participants in teams of four. Catholics and non-Catholics throughout the state participated, including priests, Knights of Columbus members and employees from Christian Brothers Services. Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Hot Springs Village sent eight teams.

More than $45,000 raised this year will fill whatever gaps are needed in ministry funding, which can include immigration, adoption and disaster relief services. CCA also offers services for those dealing with addictions, prison ministry, social action and the Westside Free Medical Clinic.

More than 50 organizations and individuals helped sponsor the tournament, including underwriter CHI St. Vincent.
