Sister Mary Miller, SSpS, soaked in the sounds of music and laughter from the adjoining room in the former St. Peter School building.

“I taught here in 1969, you know,” said the Chicago-born nun. “That’s my old office right over there.”

Sister Mary was one of six members of the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit who were in Pine Bluff conducting vacation Bible school for St. Peter Church June 17-21 and for confirmation June 23.

It was the third stop in a three-parish tour of duty for the group, the others being in Indianola and Greenville, Miss., which, like the former St. Peter School in Pine Bluff, has over the years been staffed by the order. The Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters taught at St. Peter Elementary and High School from 1930 to 1974.

The sisters welcomed 45 students to vacation Bible school, themed “God’s Rainbow of Peace.” Teachers included sisters and laypeople from the United States, Java, Sudan, Japan, China and Germany. Several parish volunteers also assisted with the daily lessons, which included skits, art projects and music.

Lunch was also served to the students, who ranged from 5 to 13 years old.

The order was invited to come to Pine Bluff by pastor Father Anil Thomas, a member of the Society of Divine Word, a related order to the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters.
