Christ the King takes first parochial league Quiz Bowl

Little Rock’s Christ the King School brought home the title in the first parochial league Quiz Bowl tournament April 20 at Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock. 

Christ the King advanced three teams from the morning’s round-robin matches along with Little Rock teams from St. Theresa School and Our Lady of the Holy Souls School, St. Joseph School in Hot Springs and St. Vincent de Paul School in Rogers.

Quarter final matches saw Christ the King 5 defeat St. Theresa, 255-190; St. Vincent de Paul defeat St. Joseph, 255-205; Holy Souls 2 defeat Holy Souls 3, 235-185; and Christ the King 3 defeat Christ the King 2, 250-190.

In the semifinals, Christ the King 5 beat St. Vincent de Paul 240-185 and Holy Souls 2 beat Christ the King 3 270-235. In the finals, Christ the King 5 downed Holy Souls 2 by a score of 270-235. Christ the King 3 and St. Vincent de Paul finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

Eighteen teams of seventh and eighth graders from eight schools participated. The schools were Christ the King, Our Lady of the Holy Souls, St. Edward and St. Theresa in Little Rock; Immaculate Heart of Mary in North Little Rock (Marche); St. John in Hot Springs; Sacred Heart in Morrilton; and St. Vincent de Paul in Rogers.

Jason Pohlmeier, principal at St. Edward School who was the driving force behind the event, said the meet was a learning experience for tournament officials as well as the participants.

He said feedback from the teams has been positive, promising for an even better event next year.
