Five high school juniors and seniors were named finalists in Arkansas Catholic’s Year of Faith Essay Contest. Catholic high school students were asked to write a reflection on Jeremiah 1:7: “But the Lord answered me, Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak.”
The finalists are:
- Alexa Gates, a senior at Mills University Studies High School in Little Rock and daughter of Kurt and Kerstin Gates of St. Jude Church in Jacksonville.
- Laurie Nick, a junior at Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock and daughter of Todd and Julie Nick of Christ the King Church in Little Rock.
- Katherine Penney, a junior at Mount St. Mary Academy and daughter of James and Wendy Penney of Christ the King Church in Little Rock.
- Taylor Wilkerson, a junior at Central High School in Little Rock and daughter of Lisa and Jerry Wilkerson of St. Jude Church in Jacksonville.
- Rachel Zimmerman, a senior at Mount St. Mary Academy and daughter of Timothy and Teresa Zimmerman of Immaculate Heart of Mary in North Little Rock (Marche).
The five essays will be published in Arkansas Catholic in February, March and April. In April the essays will be posted on Arkansas Catholic’s Facebook page and followers will be asked to vote on their favorite essay. Input from readers will be considered in the final judging. The writer with the winning essay will get a 64 GB iPad, valued at $699, plus a digital copy of the Little Rock Catholic Study Bible and free registration to the Catholic Youth Ministry Convention in Little Rock in May where the winner will be announced.
The contest is sponsored by Arkansas Catholic, Subiaco Academy and Camp Subiaco, Catholic High School, Mount St. Mary Academy, Knights of Columbus Council of Hot Springs Village, Little Rock Scripture Study and Serra Club of Greater Little Rock.
