The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is mobilizing Catholics and others to join the national effort to defend religious liberty by participating in a text messaging campaign.
Catholics and supporters of religious freedom from all faiths can text FREEDOM to 377377, or LIBERTAD to 377377 for Spanish, to join the movement and subscribe to receive more information on how to help save religious freedom.
“Across America, our right to live out our faith is being threatened — from Washington’s forcing Catholic institutions to provide services that contradict their beliefs, to state governments’ prohibiting religious charities from serving the most vulnerable,” said Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, the chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty.
Bishops across the United States have called upon the laity to take up the defense of religious liberty, the first freedom in the Bill of Rights. Bishops have marked a “Fortnight for Freedom” — from June 21- July 4 — when dioceses and parishes nationwide will observe a special period pf prayer, study, catechesis and public action to emphasize both the Christian and American heritage of liberty.
The USCCB plans to communicate with text message subscribers approximately twice a month. Standard text message and data rates may apply. If subscribers wish to opt-out of messages, they can reply STOP or request help by replying HELP or contacting freedom@usccb.org.
