A night photo of St. Anthony Church in Ratcliff, taken by Paul McGuyer of Charleston, won first place in Arkansas Catholic’s annual photo contest and will appear on the cover of the 2013 Catholic Diocese of Little Rock Directory.
McGuyer will receive photographer’s credit in the directory, a one-year subscription to Arkansas Catholic and a copy of the directory.
Second place in the contest was won by Karla Lock Harper of Monticello for her photo of a statue of the child Jesus taken through a window at Holy Child of Jesus Church in Dumas. She also captured a reflection of the church’s bell tower in the window glass.
A close-up of an ornate monstrance at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Little Rock took third place for Robert C. Alexander of Little Rock.
Honorable mentions went to photos submitted by Betty Palmer of Searcy, James L. Nowell of North Little Rock, Laura McKenney of White Hall and another photo by McGuyer.
McGuyer also won the newspaper’s first cover photo contest in 2007 with a view of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Morrison Bluff.
This year’s contest was the largest since it began, attracting 25 qualified entries. Other photographers entered the contest from Heber Springs, Little Rock, Hot Springs and Bella Vista. Eligible subjects were any architectural element or detail of a Catholic church or institution in Arkansas. Photos are judged by the newspaper staff based on composition, technical quality, visual appeal and suitability for the directory cover.
