James L. Nowell won first place and his photo on the cover of the 2012 Diocese of Little Rock Directory in Arkansas Catholic’s annual photo contest. The winning photo shows a snow-capped statue of St John the Baptist in front of Morris Hall at St. John Catholic Center in Little Rock. Nowell lives in North Little Rock.
Second place went to two photos in a tie, both taken by Nancy Smreker-Speer of Little Rock. She entered photos of the Pieta statue at the Cathedral of St. Andrew and of a statue of the angel Gabriel at Calvary Cemetery, both in Little Rock.
Lit by the setting sun, the front doors of Immaculate Conception Church in Fort Smith were the subject of the third-place winning photo taken by Patrick Studer of Little Rock.
Twenty qualified entries were received for this year’s contest. Other photographers entered the contest from Fayetteville, Hot Springs, White Hall, Quitman, Mena and Pocahontas. Eligible subjects for the contest were any architectural element or detail of a Catholic church or institution in Arkansas.

Nancy Smreker-Speer tied for second place with this photo of Gabriel at Calvary Cemetery in Little Rock. This Pieta at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock tied for second place, also for Smreker-Speer. Patrick Studer won third place with this photo of Fort Smith’s Immaculate Conception Church.
