Two newspaper staff members earn awards

Malea Hargett, editor of Arkansas Catholic, earned three awards during the annual awards banquet June 4 at the Catholic Press Association’s convention in New Orleans.
She earned a first-place award in best local/ regional news writing for newspapers with a circulation up to 17,000 for a story she wrote in November 2009 about the state of Catholic schools. She also earned second place for best coverage of a routine sacramental event and third place for best editorial on a local issue for newspapers with a circulation up to 17,000.
Also from the Catholic Press Assocation, Little Rock Scripture Study earned third place in best book on Scripture for “The Four Gospels: Catholic Personal Study Edition,” edited by LRSS director Cackie Upchurch and Father Ronald D. Witherup, SS.
On June 5 Hargett and Emily Roberts, production manager, earned additional awards for their writing and design during Arkansas Press Women’s communication contest awards luncheon in Little Rock. Hargett won three first-place awards for non-daily publication regularly edited by entrant, special articles on religion, and non-daily newspaper editorial. She also earned three second-place awards for her editing and editorial and news writing.
Roberts earned two first-place awards, for page layout in a non-daily newspaper and for website edited by entrant. She also earned two second-place awards, for page layout and for advertising campaign.
Maryanne Meyerriecks, Fort Smith correspondent, earned an honorable mention in special articles on religion for stories in Arkansas Catholic. She also earned two second place awards for a newsletter and a four-color brochure for St. Scholastica Monastery in Fort Smith.
