Diocesan policies address handling H1N1 flu
WASHINGTON (CNS) — Starting with Masses the weekend of Oct. 17-18 in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Pa., Communion will not be offered from the cup during flu season, said Bishop Joseph V. Adamec of Altoona-Johnstown in an Oct. 4 document titled “Holy Communion Directives.”
Bishops still have major concerns about health reform bills
WASHINGTON (CNS) -— None of the major health reform bills before Congress adequately addresses the concerns raised by the U.S. bishops in the areas of abortion, conscience protection, immigrants and affordability, said the heads of three major committees of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Oct. 8.
Synod: African cardinal finds candor brings complications
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The idea of an African pope captures public imagination, and Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana has discovered that it also brings its own set of problems.

The Diocese of Little Rock has 15 priests from Nigeria serving in the state. Bishop Andrew J. McDonald welcomed the first three priests in April 1993 and Nigerian priests have continued to serve in parishes and hospitals in Arkansas since that time.
The Lord left his gift of reconciliation for our spiritual healing
One of the many consoling things the Lord did while here 2,000 years ago was to leave for us a manner of receiving God’s complete forgiveness for the sins which we commit. CHICAGO (CNS) -— National leaders of the Catholic Church and Lutheran World Federation gathered in Chicago Oct. 1 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification.
‘Heroine of the commencement tragedy’
NEW YORK (CNS) -— Mary Ann Glendon was “the heroine of the Notre Dame commencement tragedy” in May, an official of the National Right to Life Committee said as the Harvard law professor and former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican received the organization’s Proudly Pro-Life Award Oct. 6.
