Catholic Adoption Services recently received a $7,289 grant from the Choose Life Adoption Assistance Program Fund through the sale of “Choose Life” specialty license plates.
Rose Mimms, executive director of Arkansas Right to Life, presented the adoption agency director, Antje Harris, with a mock check Aug. 24. Catholic Adoption Services is one of 12 organizations that applied and qualified for the money.
In 2003 the Arkansas General Assembly authorized the plate and established a Choose Life Adoption Assistance Program Fund to disburse the funds generated by the sale and renewal of the specialty plates. Of the money collected from the license plate sales, 98 percent is distributed as grants to non-profit organizations that provide free services to pregnant women and do not counsel, refer or provide abortion.
The qualifying organizations may use 60 percent of the money to provide for the needs of the mother, including housing and medical care, and the remainder may be used for adoption educational training. The grants are administered by Arkansas Right to Life.
Since August 2003, about 8,000 plates have been sold or renewed, and almost $200,000 has been raised to help women choose adoption in Arkansas.
