Msgr. J. Gaston Hebert, administrator of the Diocese of Little Rock, welcomed 11 of the 13 Nigerian priests now serving parishes across Arkansas April 20 for a luncheon meeting at St. John Center in Little Rock.
Msgr. Hebert said the meeting allowed him the chance to assess the priests’ backgrounds, abilities and language skills to consider in making future assignments in the diocese.
It was also an opportunity “to get to know them better, and to express my appreciation for what they have done in the diocese,” he said.
Three additional Nigerian priests are expected to come and serve the diocese in June, he added.
“Their presence has allowed us to keep parishes open during a time in which we lack a sufficient number of diocesan priests to minister to our people,” he said. “I have respect for the quality of their education in theology; the fellowship that they enjoy among themselves; their humility and respect for authority within the Church; and the joy with which they approach their ministry.”
