SUBIACO — Camp Subiaco, a boys’ Catholic camp operated at Subiaco Academy, will expand to two weeks for the first time this summer.
Sessions will be held June 17-23 and June 24-30. A camper may choose to attend one or two weeks.
Under the leadership of camp director Pat Franz, a 1978 graduate, and camp coordinator Mike Mangione, a 1982 graduate, Camp Subiaco will offer a variety of activities for boys ages 9 to 14.
Applications are currently being accepted, Franz said.
Camp Subiaco is operated by the Subiaco Alumni Association. The staff consists of more than 25 alumni with the help of the Subiaco monks, coaches, teachers and current students.
“For the most part camp is a Dad-ran camp,” Franz said. “The staff treats the campers like one of their own. It’s all about having fun in a safe environment.”
The alumni volunteers come from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Missouri, Mississippi, Maryland and Colorado.
The staff/camper ratio is 1 to 5.
Franz said the average day begins at 7 a.m. with breakfast. Then the boys go fishing, practice on a climbing wall and archery and have fun on go-carts. After lunch, campers go to Lake Dardanelle for tubing or to the Hidden Pool for swimming. They also go canoeing and practice riflery or other activities.
Campers live in one of the dorm rooms at Subiaco Academy.
“He will see very little of this room as most of the day he will be outside engaged in one of the many activities his team will be involved in,” Franz said. “He will spend one night of camping at our facility on Lake Dardanelle.”
Other outings include trips to First Lake and Third Lake and Fieldhouse Pond. Each Saturday parents are invited to attend a talent show and Mass at 9 a.m.
The rate for one week is $375 or $675 for two weeks.
